Essay about Motivation and Needs Heirarchy - 984 Words

The origin for concepts regarding motivational factors, as applied in the organization, stem from the [psychological] behavioral study of human needs. The relevance of the former is fundamental to the three issues posed this week because it correlates the assumptions of both Maslow and Herzberg. The aforementioned assumptions stress the importance of consideration of human needs in relation to motivational factors in the workplace, including job satisfaction, and superior performance. Furthermore, this concept has inexorably expanded to include both Maslow’s and Herzberg’s theories as a harmonious and reciprocally complementary unit; applicable to almost any organization. Therefore, a person will satisfy his basic needs before attempting to satisfy his higher order needs, such as one’s self-actualization needs (Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, Konopaske, 2009). The purpose of Maslow’s model is to analyze what motivates individuals to direct behavior towards specific needs or goals. The intent behind Maslow’s analysis is to identify the origin of motivational behavior, or lack thereof in individuals and translate his findings into a coherent application for use in organizations. The integration of Maslow’s needs hierarchy into the arsenal of the leader’s skill-set is critical. Foremost, the leader must comprehend the importance of basic need satisfaction for those whom he intends to motivate. Further, he must also understand that high performance comes from the motivation to satisfy higher-order needs, such as self-actualization (Leidecker Hall, 1984). The leader must negotiate effective methods to ensure basic needs are met and cultivate a working climate that nurtures the pursuit of higher-order needs. Thus, he will inspire the activation of those [higher-order] needs in those he leads; henceforth, he will reap the benefit of productivity for himself and the organization.
