The Internet is a vital part of the modern world. It is a tool that is used world-wide on a daily basis, and is continuing to grow as technology advances. The Internet can be used for basically anything and everything which is why it is such an important part of every day life. In recent years, the Internet has become a huge E-commerce market since it provides an array of benefits for both consumers and businesses such as variety, convenience, reliability, and mostly tax-free. However, the days of tax-free online shopping may be coming to an end as a result of the Market Place Fairness Act which was passed by the Senate in 2013. There is currently an ongoing debate between proponents and opponents of the Marketplace Fairness Act. According the the National Conference of State Legislatures, sales taxes account for over one-third of revenues for most states including over half of the tax revenues in six states (Jagoda 2014). Due to this, proponents of the act have highlighted the issue of having low tax revenues in state and local governments are actually weakening public services. â€Å"Each year, about $10 billion in tax on Internet sales goes uncollected† (Mazerov 2011). Supporters argue that this means there is $10 billion that states do not have to invest in government funded projects such as schools, hospitals, and roads. However, the people do not realize that the supporters and legislators in state capitals are just avoiding the more difficult decision of whether to cut spending or raise taxes due to the fear of voter backlash. Proponents of the bill also argue that online retailers have an unfair advantage over brick-and-mortar retailers. Journey of black history Essay Rivers to Cross is an admirable play that takes you on a wistful journey of black history, over a time period of 174 years. The atmosphere of the play is set as commemorative, yet at the same time accusing of the audience and through the use of multimedia and contemporary dance and song, Gazebo Theatre Company introduces many unknown, black characters to the audiences knowledge. While listening to the song Many Rivers to Cross before I watched the play, I felt the hardships and suffering that black people have faced throughout the 174 year journey. I felt the song was symbolic of a unity that had suffered racism and prejudice to a major extent, but still had faith. To me, this was very poignant. Some characters of the play included Ira Aldridge, Walter Tull, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Dr Harold Moody, Paul Robeson and Barack Obama. I believe the most innovative part of the play is that the production focuses primarily on British history as well as American history, which I thought was shown as insightful and profound, to a subject that has barely been touched upon. Although I believe the production was admirable, I thought the story was little confusing at times and could have been made improved, something I would have definitely done if I had the chance. Around the start of the play we see a young boy affected by the London riots stumble upon a museum and become possessed and therefore showing him the past of black history. I didnt enjoy watching the story of the riots being portrayed, especially so soon after the actual event, as it made me think that it had been added to the production quickly and in a short space of time, therefore making the play seem a little bit cheap. It also made me feel that Gazebo Theatre Company were trying too hard to relate to their audience though an issue that everyone had experienced, which I thought they could have done better in a though a different way. Another thing I disliked about this particular production was that the main character became possessed, allowing him to see and experience his ancestors past. I supposed that this supernatural element of the play didnt fit well with the historical accuracy and educational elements, and the story could have been told through a father-son conversation, which would have touched upon a key theme in the play. Unlike others, I enjoyed the beginning of the play in which a man carried a small coffin onto the stage, accompanied by emotional music. Even though this didnt have much to do with the rest of the play, it foreshadowed what the play was going to be about and also acted as metaphor for the black community finally putting their sensitive past at rest I thought this was ingenious and inspiring. Many aims of the production were touched upon throughout the play. Some of these included educational purposes, father-son relationship between the two characters, sharing awareness and celebrating English history rather than the USAs. I believe the father-son relationship theme/aim to be inspirational, since it was a well-crafted idea that celebrated black ancestors lifes through the passing down of stories between two men. This was endearing to me yet it could have been improved by being brought into the actual story, in my opinion. A main prop of the production was the use of multimedia that acted as a kind of backdrop for the production. It was used cleverly to display historic moments and pictures, and also well-known characters. To use multimedia in a production is a different and original thing to do, which added to my praise for the play. I thought the best part of the use of multimedia was when the character of Othello walked off-stage behind the screen, and then appeared on the screen this worked well as it was unexpected and was in sync, unlike other parts of the play. The contemporary dance acted as a way of telling the story without words similar to ballet yet with more of a modern feel and I believe this to be an advantageous part of the play as it was different and unexpected also. The use of song was less appreciated by me due to the fact that it diminished the enjoyment of the original Many Rivers to Cross by putting a futuristic observation on it. As well as this, the videos to the song were more like a video to an awful RB song, remi niscent of the 90s. I would have definitely taken this part of the production out. The actors gave an enthralling performance since together; they had good accents, vocals, physical presence, emotion and historical accuracy. Even though one was tangibly stronger than the other, they both excelled in their own ways throughout the play.  To conclude, I believe the production to be of emotional depth that celebrates and shares the history of black people without it being forced upon us, yet at times it seems to me that the audience are put at fault and blamed for the struggles black people have faced which I feel is unfair. I would give the play a 7/10 rating.

The European Renaissance The Renaissance was a period of European history, considered by modern scholars as that between 1300 and 1600. Many dramatic changes happend during the Renaissance. During the Middle Ages the church held most of the power and it's economy was agriculturaly based. Exploration and learning was almost put to a stop. During the Renaissance society was transformed into a society increasingly dominated by central political institutions with an urban commercial attitude. Also, people's curiosity overcame thier fear and many people started to venture out and explore. New schools and colleges became more and more common. The Renaissance was started by many rich Italian cities, such as Florence, Ferrara, Milan ,and Venice. Because these cities were very wealthy, many merchants started to spend money on different things, such as painting, learning, new banking techniques, and new systems of government. These things gave rise to a new type of scholar, the humanist. Humanism was subjects concerned with humankind and culture. They stutied various things such as Latin, Greek language, literature and philosophy. Music and mathmatics were also studied as well. The Renaissance gave way to new forms of painting , art and sculpture. During the Renaissance, artist were no longer regarded as mere artisans, as they had been to the medieval past, but for the first time emerged as independent personalities, compared to poets and writers. Many artisans merged mathmatics with art , in order to become more precise in their measurements and to make sure an object was supported both rationally and porportionally. As a result painters tried and often suceeded into making their painting a window into the world. Artists also studied the way light hits objects and the way our eyes percieve light. A new kind of paint called oil paint was used. This allowed the artist to create texture , mix colors, and allow more time for corrections before it dried. The printing press was probaly the most important advance in technology. Europeans first used movable metal type to print a book. On small pieces of metal they engraved single letters of the alphabet. These could then be arranged and rearranged to form words and sentences. Johan Gutenberg is usually given credit for the first book printed, a copy of the Bible. By the 1500's printing presses where fairly well spread. The printing press had many effects on the world. First of all, it made books much easier to come by, wich made them cheaper. That ment common people could afford them. As a result literacy became more widespread, in contrast to the Middle Ages where usually monks and church officials were the only able to read. Second, since many more people were able to read, they wanted to read subjects other than religious or scientific work. So books on other subjects were published as well. Also many books were published in languages other than Latin, such as English, Portugeese, Spanish, French, and Italian. A third effect was that scholars had better access to one anothers work. They could also read the great works of the ancient and medieval periods. The Renaissance also had an effect on the general society. Many people became interested in politics. Also, people became interested in the world outside of thier towns. Many became explorers, merchants, and mapmakers. Religion especially changed during the Renaissance.
